The French high magnetic field FT-ICR network

by Guillaume van der Rest - February 4th 2019

Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR MS)

This mass spectrometry technique allows measurement with ultra-high performance, both in mass resolution and mass accuracy. These key performance parameters make the technique extremely useful for analysis of highly complex mixutures (where resolution is a key benefit) or which require extremely high mass accuracies (such as in the determination and validation of accurate molecular formulas). It also allows storage of ion for very long time lengths (up to hours) which presents benefits for ion molecule reactions and ion spectroscopy experiments.

The French network

The French FT-ICR network brings together seven laboratories that operate FT-ICR instruments in France. This network is supported by the CNRS and on the national infrastructure roadmap of the French Ministry for Research. Scientists from France and from abroad can apply for instrument time on these top-level instruments based on the submission of a proposal, which is reviewed by an external review panel.

After reviewing, once the project is accepted, access to the facilities is free for the users, which only have to bring or send their sample to the site. On-site scientists and technical staff bring their scientific and technical expertise to ensure that the experiment, the data recorded and its interpretation will be of the highest standard.
